Beverly, and other Medit-Planters,
Beverly Elischer asked me about checking out the Chelsea Physic Garden in
London. It is a wonderful place and an absolute must if you like plants
and are in central London. They have good collections of Mediterranean
species, which do rather well in the warm microclimate and low rainfall
(about 20 inches / 500 mm per year). They have a large olive tree, cork
oak, kermes oak (Quercus coccifera), a large collection of Cistus
species, many species peonies, and much more. Before I moved from London
to the U.S., I gave them all my own Mediterranean plants from Greece,
etc. April, May or June are great times to go.
The Garden is open to the public on Wednesdays and Sundays, as far as I
remember (not 100 per cent sure, so you might want to call them to check).
Nearest tube stations are South Kensington and Sloane Square. The Garden
is situated on Royal Hospital Road, between that road and the Chelsea
Embankment (main road running alongside the Thames). Royal Hospital Road
is almost parallel to Chelsea Embankment, and eventually meets it; the
Garden is about 50 m before that corner. Look it up on a London street
map; the roads will be labelled even if the Garden isn't. There's a sign
outside, with a door set a longish, featureless brick wall.
The phone number is + 44 171 352 5646, or 0171 352 5646 if you're in the
U.K., or just 352 5646 if you're in central London.
Nick.
