Lemon Grass, Whole Foods plants in Bay Area

Wow, you people are great! Thanks for so many wonderful and detailed
suggestions. I will find a wet, sunny, out of the way corner for my
plant. Until then (this is a new house and I don't have my planting beds
all set up yet) I may put it in a larger container.

If it does grow to unreasonable proportions, I guess I'll just have to
invite local folks to take cuttings/divisions :-)

Since several people asked, here's some more info on Whole Foods. Whole
Foods (www.wholefoods.com) is a national chain food market that leans
towards natural and organic foods and products. They have a couple other
names including Bread and Circus. They have an excellent high quality
product line but tend to be pricey.

This was the first time I remember seeing plants for sale at one of their
stores. It was a display out front in the Berkeley store. Half was
perenials and the other half was herbs. The selection was fairly small (a
couple dozen varieties) but most of the plants were quite unusual.
Lemongrass is pretty hard to find for one. There were several kinds of
thyme I'd never even heard of. A few leafy herbs used in Asian cooking. I
don't recall the rest.

Most were in 4" pots for about $2 each. The plants were large and healthy
looking. I don't know if they were all strictly organic, but I am assuming
that Whole Foods does not use chemcials on them once they are delivered to
the store. Inside the store is a Seeds for Change (do I have that name
right?) seed rack.

The Berkeley Whole Foods is on Telegraph right on the corner of Ashby (the
local continuation of route 13). There is also one in Palo Alto at the
corner of Homer and Emerson (one block north of Alma; 3-5 blocks east of
University). See the web page for other stores.

I haven't explored the independent nurseries up here in the East Bay (just
the sorry selections at Home Depot) so I don't know what their selections
are like. But surely there is one with what Whole Foods has and more, no?

Also...I was a little worried posting about lemongrass on this list since
Thailand is not in the Mediteranean...but I hoped the list was about the
climate and what will grow there or in similar climiates around the world,
as opposed to just native Mediteranean plants. If I am wrong, I hope the
list managers will let me know.

Thanks!
Cyndi
