Scutellaria species notice

Some of you may be growing Mediterranean Scutellaria species or have
access to wild cultivars. For this reason, I am posting the following
notice:

I am forming a Scutellaria seed and information exchange group. Anyone
donating Scutellaria seed can join the Scutellaria seed and information
exchange group, although rare and unusual seed species are preferred. I
will initially handle the seed bank exchange program (storing, filing,
seed donations, and seed requests).

I am hoping to have a web site set up by late August or early
September. Most of the Scutellaria group activities, announcements, and
updates will be handled via E-mail. Members who wish to have their
E-mail addresses (and/or home page) listed and a brief paragraph about
themselves may do so on the Scutellaria Members Page after their seed
donation is received. The Web site will focus on information about
different Scutellaria species with lots of links to articles, pictures,
and other related topics to be found elsewhere on the web. If you have
any suggestions regarding the new web site, please let me know by early
August.

I am going to ask everyone to have their main seed donation(s) mailed by
October 31st so that I can send out the main E-mail seed list by the
first week in November. Seed which becomes available after October 31st
from Southern Hemisphere members, greenhouse specimen members, and
other later period seed setting regions will be made available sometime
in late March or early April. In addition, members who belong to other
seed exchanges may have unwanted or additional seed to donate in
February or March. Therefore, a secondary seed list will most likely be
E-mailed out the first or second week in April.

Although my main concern is the distribution of seed, some people have
inquired about trading Scutellaria cuttings and tubers. I am
tentatively hoping that the exchange of cuttings and tubers can be
handled between individual members who have similar interests on a more
regional basis, due to shipping regulations. I may be able to send out
a monthly E-mail bulletin (haves and wants) regarding tubers and
cuttings. I will just have to see what kind of interests members have
and go from there. Group members who are only interested in the seed
exchange and do not want their E-mail address shared with other group
members should let me know.

This in not a business, but merely an effort to create interest,
information, and access to seed from all the various Scutellaria species
from around the world. This is a purely personal endeavor, with no
money or warranties involved. My interest is mainly research for herbal
medicinal use of rare and unusual species. Some may be interested in
conservation efforts, while others may just want to enjoy the beauty of
ornamental use in the garden or landscape. Nursery owners may find this
a unique opportunity to test species for their own particular needs. I
am also interested in the selective breeding of genetic anomalies within
a given species.

For instance, I have a single specimen out of a larger group of
Scutellaria altissima which has distinctively darker colored leaves than
the others from the same group. The flowers are identical, but the
medicinal properties of the darker leaf specimen appear to be
significantly enhanced. I will be attempting to breed this enhanced
Scutellaria altissima true to its strain. In the meantime, a limited
amount of seed from the original darker leaf specimen will be made
available in the fall to group members who express an interest.

I feel the information shared by the Scutellaria seed and information
exchange group will be very helpful to all of the members. Scutellaria
seed donations which have been cleaned, labeled, and includes any other
additional useful information should be mailed to:

A record of seed donations will be kept on file and requests for seed
will be honored only by those who have previously donated seed. If you
would like to include a SASE (International Reply Coupon outside the
USA) along with your seed donation, it would help to defray the costs of
the seed exchange program and although not yet required, it would be
very much appreciated.

Please let me know if there are any particular species of Scutellaria
that you are interested in that are not readily available from other
sources in your region. As long as members continue to gather seed from
the species that they grow or seed which is selectively harvested from
the wild, the seed bank should be able to keep up with the demand for
seed requests from its members. Some seed species may be available in
limited quantities, but every effort will be made to provide you with
requested seed species from the E-mail seed lists. I look forward to
hearing from you.

Nurturing thoughts,

Steven McCauley
