Apart from Kew, I'd suggest the Chelsea Physic Garden, Royal Hospital
Road, Chelsea, London SW3. I don't know their phone number, but it will be
in the phone book when you get there. When I lived in London (until 1997)
it was open to the public Wednesdays and Sundays. Very good plantings,
well labeled, lots of Mediterranean stuff, as the climate is mild and
summer dry there. A few plant sales too. Nearest Underground station:
Sloane Square (District/Circle Line).
As for Bookshops, the one at Kew is good, as is the one at the Natural
History Museum, Cromwell Road, South Kensington, London SW7.
You could also try the huge Foyle's bookshop on Charing Cross Road (or is
it Tottenham Court Road -- the former becomes the latter as you go north).
Nearest Underground station is Tottenham Court Road (Northern Line). They
have a large section (whole room) for gardening/natural history.
Have fun! Nick.
