I was off just a bit. But there is a reason I associated it, I
looked in my beautiful book of "Caudiciformes" by Rowley and there Nolina
was on the same page as Calibanus. What we call beaucarnea recurvata, he
calls Nolina recurvata.
Nolina recurvata has a grass like top and a bulbous lower trunk which rises
to a slimmer stem which finally results in this profuse clump of hair or
grass.
It can get quite large, 12 or 15 feet tall. I've seen them as a
street tree in Los Angeles. We have about a f-6 ft one on our deck which I
will go down and photograph immediately. I will have it on my caudiciforme
page shortly under Beaucarnea recurvata.
Beaucarnea is one of those yucca like things with a base that
expands to fill the space availbe. It should not be planted closer than
about eight feet to a house!
Just what Nolina texana is, I don't know. But it has to be related!
