Some more info: the Fall 1989 isue of Parabola (The Tree of Life) has a
number of articles that you might find useful. One article is an analysis
of the Grain of Mustard Seed, another on The Tree at the Heart of the
Garden, another on the Celestial Root (about man as an inverted tree with
his roots in Heaven). The Green Man is a study on the presence and meaning
of pagan symbols in medieval Derman churches. This publication transcends
differences between Christian and non-Christian religious concepts by
presenting them side-by-side and including perspectives of each other by a
host of well-respected writers, scholars, healers, ministers, etc.

One common idea discussed is how the tree is a symbol for man's reaching
into other realms (air, heaven, earth, etc,) and both emanating and
receiving from them. Isn't it interesting that Christ was sacrificed on an
artificial tree (crucifix)?
