Matson, sunburned daylilies

Temp. Sun. 7/11: 100 degrees in full sun, 95 degrees in shade, north
side of house. Pretty normal here for July. I feel sorry for my
neighbors in the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys.

My daylilies also seem to get sunburned in midsummer each year, but
still bloom. I think sacrificing a few leaves is the plant's way of
making sure moisture gets to the buds and flowers. Maybe not. This year,
the blooms aren't quite as profuse as I'd like and they bloomed rather
late, unexpectedly. You can't always understand what's going on...

Maura asks... "How can we best remember and honor Gary on Medit Plants?"
The e-memorial idea for Gary is an intriguing idea, even if it seems
impractical. How do you construct something permanent on the Internet?
I, too, thought of the consonance of Matson and mulching. Perhaps all
mulching information exchanged here could be predicated with a "Matson
Memorial Mulch" tag. It seems crass, though. We could also identify
Gary's spirit with horticultural input from his Shasta bioregion: The
Upper Sacramento River Valley east to the Great Basin desert. This is
where his plant wisdom had the greatest impact.

At some point, perhaps his daughter will contact us and we can ask her
what she thinks.

Thinking about this question maybe as useful as actually coming up with
an answer.
