Greek mythology explains the rythm of winter and summer, life and death in
the story of Adonis. He stayed 6 months with Aphrodite
life-summer-upperworld) and 6 months with Persephone
(death-winter-underworld). Aphrodite is symbolised with myrthus and
Persephone with Punica granata, sign of eternal life.
This cult of Adonis (death and resurrection) was celebrated on the 21th of
June. The women of Athens did this by sowing fennel, salad, barley and wheat.
The little plants died a quick death because they were not watered, thus
symbolising the short life and cruel death of Adonis. This cult was the
early beginning of gardening in pots. Especially on rooftops.
This is my epitaph for Gary Matson.
