That's what is (per the label stake at least) commonly available here
in Kansas and probably many places in the nursery-trade universe. I've grown
both this and the species (from seed) and don't see much difference in color
or size, but do recall that the species (even in a far less favorable spot)
was considerably more assertive.
It's` worth noting that recent Siskiyou Rare Plant Nursery catalogs -
while not claiming authorship of this plant (I don't recall that they ever
did, btw) do now describe it as "an easy, >invasive< perennial."
(overseas & non-western readers: the Siskiyous are a small mountain
range in southern Oregon / northern California noted for their concentration
of endemic plants; the eponymous nursery is certainly the best-known, if not
quite the most comprehensive source of "rock garden" plants in the US).
