Peter: I spent 8 or 9 years in Cambridge so I know the climate. All
too well. I notice you didn't mention the wind in winter... I wonder
why.
These other Canary Island oddities sound fascinating - and well suited
to my mild but wet coastal garden. I'll certainly try to track'em down
and have a go.
Leptospermum grandiflorum I don't know. I grow its confused cousin, L.
grandifolium, instead. Or what CLAIMS to be. In my experience most of
the Leptospermums which are feasible in the UK will stand quite severe
clipping. Not only stand it but positively seem to enjoy it. (Do you
know Jeff Irons & Thomas Ross's book on AUSTRALASIAN PLANTS IN
CULTIVATION IN EUROPE? It's often useful for this sort of info - tho'
I confess they don't include L. grandiflorum - but, yes, they do
include grandifolium.)
I don't need to say what the weather's like here - anyone watching the
Open Golf Championship (other side of the country but close enough to
be comparable) on their TV will already have seen it - and a chunk of
hebe has just flown past the window to prove that the wind HASN'T died
down...
