It seems to me that Pacific Hort didn't get Low
Maintenance right. I'm an old coot and many of
my old coot gardening friends all seem to be
saying the same thing. . . I'm having problems
getting down on my hands and knees, My back
is killing me, I can't keep up with my garden, etc.
The fear is that down the road, we'll have to give
up the garden and go into a condo or worse.
I'm going to do a class series at the L.A. County
Arboretum this fall - three sessions: 1.) Labor saving
tools and how to use them in a less labor intensive
way; 2.) How to design a less labor intensive garden -
simpler designs, using plants that are less labor
intensive, using raised beds, etc; 3.) How to garden in
a less labor intensive way - greater use of mulch to
minimize weeding and watering, greater use of automated
watering systems, learning how to not to see those things
we don't want to see, etc.
Planting native grasses, etc. just doesn't get it when the
problem is failing strength, agility, and endurance.
