festival.
Dear Trevor,
I can tell you what is going on at Landriana, as I am in very friendly
terms with some people who work there, besides going to Landriana quite
often. The charge of the garden has been taken by one of the 4 daughters
of Lavinia. This one is not a gardener AT ALL and is still very much
unprepared to the responsibilities involved. Apparently she just can't
understand what is all this fuss about it... she looked sort of astonished
when I brought people from as far as US to visit the garden. Unfortunately
Joan Tesei, whom many of you have met, had serious health problems last year
and therefore she could not follow the garden as it would have been
desirable. As a result, the crew felt it had been left on its on, and this,
together with a dramatic cut on the budget, led to the head gardener
quitting her position and moving to England, I think to work for Sutton.
At the moment the family is looking for a part-time consultant (I was
informally contacted to this end) and I understand the Garden Club of Rome
will help to select a candidate. The garden is not in bad conditions, all
considered, but of course people who have an eye for these things can see it
need to be firmly directed. Most of all, the garden crew needs enthusiasm
and energy. They feel like they're floating without an aim, and just keep
repeating the same old routine.
As for the festival, there was rumor they would not repeat it next year, but
until now no decision has been taken. If you would like me to keep you
posted, I will with pleasure.
Regards,
Alessandra
