Amaryllis

Hello Barbara,
I gather you mean Amaryllis belladonna - which you would need several iron bars to stop flowering and kill in the area in which I live.  It is always one of the last surviving plants left after a farm house block has been deserted.  After the '86 fires along the Victorian (Australia) coastline, "Belladonnas" were photographed flowering amidst the blackened landscape.
If, however, you have a  Hippeastrum, the conditions required are somewhat different, and I am no expert.  Mine have only recently begun to flower for me, after a very rocky initiation.  They rather like being crowded in a pot, and need to be kept dry over the dormant period.  Perhaps the bulb has "had its day" and you should be encouraging any side bulbs to grow on??  I know some who rid themselves of the bulbs after they have flowered, and start with  new ones the following year!!!!! I like to persevere a little more.
Good luck,
Cara
