The confusion is recorded in Flora Europea, and is evidently the result of
various breeders using different species names favored in different
countries and at different times. Since there must have been confusion
about the true binomial names of the parent plants over the last 150 years
(along with secret or absent breeding records), I suspect that no one can
resolve the name situation, unless DNA analysis becomes an inexpensive
method. These meadow sages (including pratensis and haematoedes) are a
really tangled mess.
