Root deth on Pittosporum

I wonder if any of you have had the same problem.
I have recently pulled a few pittosporum plants out of the ground with one hand, as they were clearly
as dead as dodos, only to find that the roots had no capillaries at all, but just a wooden stump. The
first few had been planted next to some oleanders, which I thought were to blame, but recently there
have been plants in monospecies groups. I don't know whether the capillaries had been eaten or had
rotted (very quickly).
Any ideas what could be doing this, especially if it is a pathogen which I could do something about?

Anthony
