I was looking through an old Encyclopedia Britannica we have, and was
looking at the fossils in the Paleobotany section. In it, it had a picture
of a fossil of Viburnum marginatum. I also have a cutting of my Viburnum
opulus "Roseum" (it still has the smaller leaves that opened when it
bloomed). When I looked at the leaves of V. opulus, they looked strikingly
similar to the V. marginatum leaf in the picture. Same three main lobes,
with similar veining and serrated edges. The only differences were V.
opulus has deeper lobes and serrations than V. marginatum does, and also a
narrower shape.
