This is a very reliable plant in Southern California, Marilyn, I
don't see any reason to be wary of it. In fact, I saw it growing
very happily in a garden in the foothills of the Pasadena area a few
weeks ago on the Medt Garden Society tour. They were in flower nicely
(both green and grey leaved varieties though they were not labeled so
I do not know their identities) though we had had neither rain nor
heat.
