I've dried a lot of them by slicing them in half and laying them on cookie sheets in the sun.  If you want to dry them whole, you would probably have to use a dehydrator.  The figs I've known fall off the tree when overripe, rather than drying on the branches. By the time they're that ripe, they usually squish when they hit the ground.  But if your tree is growing in a vacant lot with tall grass, that might not happen.  However, I would think raccoons, ants, etc. would get to them and there wouldn't be that many that survived intact long enough to dry.  Actually I don't think any would -- but what do I know?   Good luck with whichever method you choose, and they sound delicious, both fresh and dried!
