I drove the the plant again, the upper newer leaves
are distinctly golden, so much so they contrast
strongly with the deep green leaves on the rest of the
plant. It definitely is a Metrosideros (right flowers,
flower clusters, leaf colorm, shape, and arrangement).
One other thing, the plant has a lighter red flower,
much like the flowers of the new specimens along the
new street here. But, all other metrosideros i've seen
have greenish gray new growth. This would be an
interesting new variety i think, worthwhile just for
the contrast of the new leaves (if this sport keeps
the habit, it could be something else)
Also, there are three M. excelsa (apparently) that
were planted in front of a newer shopping center and i
haven't seen these bloom at all, while smaller younger
trees are blooming. They must be variable in bloom
when young.
