Doris, et al:
As far as some common names on my plants, I have Santa
Cruz Ironwood, Island Snapdragon, Autumn Sage, Bush
Anemone, Chiapis Sage, and an interspecific hybrid
Gazania. These are but a few and only those in bloom
whose common names I could actually think of quickly.
I'm not good with common names except those that
botanists love making fun of because they're so cute
and confusing.
The only fragrant one above is Bush Anemone
(Carpenteria californica). I mostly plant bird and
butterfly attractants in my garden and that doesn't
include a lot of fragrant things.
As for birds, I pretty much have what you have up in
SLO. By the way, we do not have "blue jays" in
California (at least not commonly). What most
non-ornithologists call "blue jay" around here is
actually the Western Scrub-Jay. And in the ne corner
of SLO, you also have some resident Steller's Jays
around the river area (we have none in Santa Maria
proper). But no true "blue jays" such as those found
back east.
The "little plump birds mostly gray, with a bit of
black that come in flocks" are Bushtits. They're
quite common around the Central Coast. Soon after
nesting (when they travel as singles or pairs), they
begin to flock again and for the rest of the year
until next spring courting season.
