Re: the Neighbors Hedge

First, there are laws in California. You cannot cut a
plant back INTO the neighbor's property.

Second, I suspect there are laws that require a
neighbor to keep his or her plant from encroaching
upon your propety.

Third, the laws that require the neighbor to
"maintain" are rarely if ever enforced and I do know
of one specific case where the hedgy neighbor was
taken to court and the result was that the judge
suggested the encroached-upon neighbor to "cut at
will" ... "on his or her property" only. No damages,
fines, punishment awarded.

Fourth, "hedging" plants does encourage them to grow
faster and with more growth than you would get if you
selectively pruned and "pruned into" the plant as my
good arborist friend describes. That means cutting a
whole branch back to the next branch from which it
came AT LEAST the length that you want to cut back.
Good lopping shears and/or pruning saw required.

Fifth, same applies to trees.

Sixth, we are ruled by the codes of our horticultural
souls and that does not allow us to butcher plants
regardless of how nasty the owner of that plant is.

Seventh, is it too late in the war to invite the
neighbor over for cake and coffee to discuss options?
