Re: Childhood plant memories

What a tame bunch of nice children you lot must have been. I have vivid
memories of 'fights', perhaps wars would be a better term between the
kids in our new neighbourhood of war vet homes. After the WW2 there were
housing and skilled labour shortages so lots od returned soldiers set
themsleves up in building co-operatives and agred to help build
each-others houses. the estates where these were built were carved out
of an old market garden area famous for tomatoes, cucumbers, melons and
summer stone fruits so our houses were surrounded by remnants of
orchards and acres and acres of vegetables and salad plants summer and
winter.

It was our bad habit to build up stocks of over-ripe fruits and veg and
pelt each other with them from out cubby houses. these we made from
packing crates and scraps of building lumber and firbre board. usually
they were raised up on tree stumps or fence poles so that they
overlooked lanes or other yards and from these vantage points we
bombarded rival enemies with super ripe apricots, squishy tomatoes,
explosive melons and cucumbers. What a mess we made - and no-one got
hurt. All the damage was washed away by a bath, or by running under a
sprinkler in our under-wear.

But can you imagine the awful strife we got into when our apricot bombs
were lobbed through the empty window holes of our new house and
splattered all over the fershly dried white plaster on the walls?!!!!

My Mum was not impressed, and neither were the men of the co-op when
they saw their pristine work heavily stained orange and brown.
