Bamboo Giant in Aptos reccomends a 60 mil barrier of polyethelene for
containing bamboo: http://www.bamboogiant.com/html/barrier.html. This
is thick enough to contain the rhizomes. They also say that the
barrier needs to be tilted out from the plant about 15 degrees to
prevent rhizomes from heading down. I'm not so sure about metal, but
others might have seen it used.
Incidentally, our neighbors have a clump of phyllostachys they've kept
controlled by giving it little supplemental water. It's been there for
over 10 years and hasn't spread much. Of course, that isn't what you
intend to do!
