Subject: Coastal Commission in Peril
Folks - Can you write letters in support of the CA Coastal Commission?
As of yesterday, 31 Coastal Commission employees got lay-off notices. The CCC has only 131 employees statewide, so this is approximately 25% of its staff. Of the 11 existing enforcement staff, 4 have received notices (Long Beach officer, SoCal supervisor and two out of three headquarters analysts).
Contrary to recent news stories, the Commission is no Goliath. These staff cutbacks will really decimate the Commission, preventing it from carrying out its mission. We're going back to the old-time Republican administrations in California, where the Commission was so underfunded it could barely operate!
Please write a short letter of support for the Coastal Commission to the Governor and your state legislators. It is especially important to get letters to Republican legislators. Ask them not to cut the Commission's budget or these important positions. Your can find the addresses and fax numbers of state officials easily online.
