As I understand it, some say that these are two different species,
while some say that R. trichocalyx is a variation of R. coulteri. I am
confused because I have what is R. trichocalyx - bristles along the
stem in random places, very deeply cut and narrow foliage, bristly
flower buds with depressed seams and no terminal point. But, what
confuses me, is one of the sprouts that has come up is has no
bristles, it has a pointed flower bud with no bristles, and the
foliage looks to be wider than other similar sprouts.
Is it likely that this shoot is a sport, and further shoots from it
will become bristly, or would it continue to produce smooth stemmed
and budded sprouts, especially if I sever it from the main plant?
Thank you,
