Re: suggestions for shady planting strip

Hello Kay,

Here in Montpellier (France) I have tried Chasmanthium latifolium in dry shade and it has wonderfully adapted, because it's reseeding. So I discovered a new plant (for me) the same one but with variegated foliage : Chasmanthium "River Mist" and I just planted them this spring. I have great hopes with them. I love grasses. I'm going to try another one that I don't find on your list, Sean, it's Dracunculus vulgaris. As it has a summer period rest, I can assume that it will stand summer drought. You could add too, geranium nodosum. This topic is allways coming on talks, because it is a difficult situation.

Hi all,
I have a planting area of about 3' by 12', so not much, but I'd like it to look nice. It's bright shade, irrigated (but not heavily; I'm in droughty California). I've seen the lists for shade plants, especially dry shade, but I would love to have suggestions for combinations of plants that would grow well together. What shrubs, perennials, annuals would you put together to make an interesting border? There's nothing but mulch there at the moment, so consider it a blank slate.
thanks in advance,
