An Italian Garden

Can anyone give me suggestions for a *small* formal Italian garden?
It's approximately 18 feet by 12 feet and has a 9 foot high roof of
translucent fiberglass. Three walls are brick and the fourth is a pair of
sliding glass doors leading into the house. The space has a small (4 feet
round by 2 feet deep) pool in the center.
For now, I'm thinking of going with 4 small upright shrubs (to stand in for
Italian Cypress) in a square just around the pool, set in 'campana' style
clay pots. I'm looking for herbs or smaller shrubs that might do well
surrounding this location. Flowers would be nice, but not essential.
It's oriented towards the south, in USDA zone 8 (barely) (20 to 10 degrees
farenheight minimum winter outdoor temperature) The 'greenhouse' has no
ventilation except a fullsize door in one corner. I'm hoping the pond will
moderate any massive temperature swings.
Thank you for any assistance you can provide.
