Yes, this is characteristic.

A lot of people feel that way about cherimoyas, and even more so about paw
paws. But for some of us, it was "love at first taste." My preference is to
cut the cherimoya in quarters and eat it straight out of the skin (like
kids eat watermelon slices at a picnic) while leaning over the sink.
