Arctostaphylos

Hi all you avid gardeners! This is my first time online with you.

I have had arctostaphylos uva-ursi growing on two slopes for 30+ years.
This past year most died on the sunniest slope and more recently at least
half of the plants on my half -day shaded slope have died. Can anyone
suggest what might have happened? Old age? The pH is about 6.5 and I
know manzanitas like an acid soil closer to 5 but why now after all these
years? Another factor might be the fact that moles have been
zigzagging across under the ground and perhaps disturbing the roots. I
also have not given these plants a lot of fertilizer over the years but
they seemed to be growing well until this past year. Every year I have
watered about every three weeks during the summer and fall and I followed
that schedule last year.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Claire Russell
