Re: Medlar


At least here in the San Francisco area, it is NOT necessary to subject the
medlars to frost before bletting. 

I have a friend who sometimes gets a few from the tree at the UC Botanic
Garden here in Berkeley. Sh says the trick is to collect them soon after
they fall off the tree -- before the bugs and molds get started on them.
Then set them on an open-work tray in a place where they will get good air
circulation, and wait for them to soften. She puts them in her garage. Her
biggest problem is keeping the local wild rats from eating the fruit before
it is fully bletted.
