Too much mystique about wasabi! Wasabi is indeed grown commercially in North
America and New Zealand, as you will see from these web pages:
http://www.freshwasabi.com/ or http://www.freshwasabi.com/
They dub themselves the largest fresh wasabi grower in North America.
The New Zealand wasabi is at the following address, and has some good
information on the history and cultivation of the plant, including a photo
of how it is farmed in Japan:
http://www.wasabi.co.nz/
My own experiment with growing wasabi hydroponically was aborted when the
plant, brought by a friend from Japan, was stolen by a raccoon. Until then,
it was thriving in its bucket of aerated, mildly fertilized spring water.
It's fussy, but not impossible.
