Just a point in response to the observation made by David Poole:
"I must add that in exceedingly bright and hotter situations such as are
likely to occur much further south (from here that is - so if you are
further south than the Great Lakes.....), water levels may drop too rapidly
and may need topping up for the first week at least."

The Great Lakes (from the top of Lake Superior to the southern shores of
Lakes Erie and Ontario) stretch over 7 degrees of latitude, or approximately
the same distance from Aberdeen to Paris, or Torquay to the Southeastern
border of Spain - in other words, quite some distance! In terms of quality
of light it ranges from about Paris to Rome - as does the summer climate
(though not the winter!).
