I guess my information largely duplicates the contributions
of others. But I'll chime in anyways. I'm successfully
growing a plant very much like the one Kurt described
as Brugmansia X insignis "Pink." They seem to be quite
happy without any water thus far this dry seasaon, but
then again they haven't bloomed, either. They were
uneffected by the not-so great freeze this past winter
and are both approximately 2m in height. These plants
are about three years old and were grown from seed.
To my eye, a more impressive, if vaguely similar, plant
is Datura meteloides, a California desert native, i believe.
It has large pale-lavender blossoms with a very subtle fragrance.
I've got several specimens scattered about in a somewhat
wild section of the backyard. The ducks and geese have
apparently learned quite well not to eat them. They all
died back a bit this past winter (the Datura, not the geese).
One is now about 40cm in height but nevertheless covered with
15 cm flower buds.
I consider the toxicity of these plants a great benefit
since it's apparently enough to keep the voracious
pocket gophers away.
