Phormium tenax is not a very reliable plant in Israel, even when well
established it dose'nt last more than a few years.
Green varieties are doing the best, also in full sun.
C.v. 'atropurpurea' is less strong and should be grown in a shady, well
drainage position, it can get a morning or afternoon sun.
Variegated forms never last more than a few mounts in any conditions.
It is important to plant them with the base 2 cm above soil level and than
cover it with gravel [ never wood chips, since they hold to much humidity
and cause diseases]
The hart of the plant should be always cleaned from falling leaves,
and sick areas are to be removed immediately with a clean Knife.
They grow best in rockeries or in elevated beds where drainage is good.
Green forms are easy to grow from seed, and can be planted out in their
second year.
