Dear Julie,
It depends if you are in Northern or South California; but generally
you should be able to grow all species originating from the 5 regions
with a mediterranean climate. You allready growing some Californian
species, but you should try the South African bulbs from the Cape
(there is an enormous choice), Leucocorynes from Chili, Lycoris from
China, and Cylamen, Crocus, Scilla etc from the mediterranean
basin.(just to mention a few)
They all have in common that they are summer dormant winter growers to
be planted during the July-October period. Being well adapted to the
Mediterranean climate they are most likely to stay in your garden for
many years to come.

If you have irrigation facilities you can also consider growing
species originated from warm humid summer which have a winter dormancy
(or evergreens)
which should be planted in the winter or early spring.
Hope this will give some guidance.
