Re: Eucalyptus Trees: Good or Bad?

	Sorry David, but -----------
Part of Californians distaste comes from at least three things.
First, there are stories about some early "enthusiasts"
thinking they would make good furniture or some such idea and they
planted miles of them. It is amazing to see the forests of Eucalyptus
that have been obviously planted in rows like corn. They go on and
on, over hill and dale and it is easy to get to feel resentful that
they have crowded out everything else. It also turned out that they
apparently brought over the wrong ones. They seem to have no real use
except as firewood and they really burn too fast for that!
Secondly, it seems possible that when they brought over the
seeds, they did not bring the soil components that degrade the leaves
and other detritus the tree seems so willing to give. It is a dirty
tree.
And thirdly, they outlive us and when the second generation
of people inherit these trees they are beyond control. They are
enormous with large diameters. Removal seems impossible and if it is
in the middle of the area you want to plant as a formal garden, it
will probably take more than half your garden budget to remove it!
So, I for one do not wish to visit these on my descendants. I
have removed a half dozen of them, planted by someone else, when they
were no more than six inches in diameter. It still took a backhoe to
remove the stumps!
Ugh! I'm sorry if I dislike them! ---Chas---
