RE: Orchids in Medit climates, hardiness and availability

I can fill in some information. 
I also have seen several unnamed species growing at
the botanic garden there along the coast in San Diego
County(can't remember the name...),

I was also wondering if anyone knows the origin of the
species name "macrantha", as this is also    the
species name for another of my favorite plants,
Ruellia macrantha.  

Macrantha means large-flowered.
