When i planted the flowering plum in my yard, i didnt stake it at all. It
never really needed to be staked because the root ball was large enough to
keep the tree from being blown over. And even now, about 7 years later, it
withstands our decently strong winds without the slightest hint it will
blow over. It dos bend quite a bit, but it's stable at the base. Also,
when i bought it, it was a bare root tree from the nursery, so it never
was root bound at all. I've also pruned it several times to reduce the
amount of branches it has and to keep it open in the center, and other
branches from crossing and rubbing against eachother.
