Dearest Nan and Friends, March 23, 2001

I'm fine, just incredibly overworked. I had a huge shipment of
shade perennials
and double primulas from Russ Graham and we're trying to plant and pot these
before my order of maddenia rhododendron species arrives from
Scotland, bare root!
And Roger Gossler is arriving the AM to deliver Magnolia denudata and
M. 'Princess Margaret' plus six Helleborus lividus and 3 H. atrorubens(the real
thing).

Karoline and I spent yesterday manning the Cal Hort booth-NEW PLANT
INTRODUCTIONS-
at the SFFGS at the Cow Palace. There were some nice gardens but I am getting
sooooo bored with water falls and phoney gardens where succulents mixed with
ferns. The Cal Hort Booth in the East Hall right next to the
Tamalpais Room is
knocking them dead. Fabulous new patented mimuli by Rich Persoff in whites,
creams, greens-WOW! Too many different restios from Martin Grantham-they all
start looking alike after a while but beautifully grown.
Australians from Jeff
Rosendale that could knock you off your feet and many perennials from Muchtar
Saltzman at Emerisa gardens including the new variegated Polemonium caeruleum
which I must get a flat of for my lecture in May for the Diablo Women's Garden
Club entitled-MUST HAVES FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM.

Plus we're preparing for a NYC opera tour which runs 4/5-4/8 at the NYCO &
The Met. Any Medit planters who love opera should take a look at
the itinerary
at our web site-www.operalover.net. The tour is on sale and it's a steal!

And my garden's fabulous this spring-hellebores in black, chocolate,
plum, huge
pin striped pinks and some disappointing yellows. The rhododendrons are so
fragrant. Everything would be perfect in spite of my disability if
only my next door
neighbor who's suffered several tragedies-survived breast cancer then survived
brain cancer BUT her husband bailed out when the latter was diagnosed
weren't threatening to appropriate 2.5' x the depth of her
property-remove my fence-cut down my Darjeeling Cypress and hundreds
of rare shrubs and trees. First she sued her neighbor to the south
AND WON. Now she's threatening me over the property line.

When I bought my house in 1968 it came with a second lot. I sold
1/2 the second lot
to my neighbor so no one could ever build on it and I could save
1,600 dollars a year
in taxes. The surveyor marked the line and I built my fence 8" my side of the
property line. Now she's had a new survey and is making life
miserable for all her
neighbors. I can't afford to do yet another survey, so I've
engaged an attorney.
I'm trying to have the cypress declared "untouchable"...there are 4 in the USA;
one at Quail planted by Steve Brigham; one at Strybing so huge it's
losing its beauty;
one in Marcia Donahue's garden, and mine. That's all folks.

Are there Medit-planters in this area who would be willing to picket
to save my tree and garden. Please call me in Berkeley at (510)
524-0888 or email me at: operatic@earthlink.net. Gee, life is
full of surprises and tribulations. There are days I feel blessed
and others when I feel like Job.

Your friend,
Michael D. Barclay, MLD
