Gosh -- I hope I didn't come off as a cynic!  Skeptic,
maybe, but not cynic.

As for the fruit, now that you describe it better, I'd
say it was more a type of paprika pepper than a "chili
or cherry pepper".

Paprikas do have that slightly chewy skin (makes them
perfect for drying) and their flavor is more
sweet/fruity than hot (although hot selections can be
HOT).

I'm not sure about South African seed and plant
commerce but I would think it more likely that a plant
such as this volunteer would have it's origins in
Europe more than from the Americas anyway.

In asking a South African-transplant friend of mine
about this critter, he said he wasn't sure what it was
but HE HAD SOME SEED THAT SOMEONE IN SA HAD SENT TO
HIM.  He will be growing it this spring.
