Picking up on Gordon's query and Joe's suggestion, it's certainly true that
many hakea species, particularly, seem perfectly happy taking quite
significant amounts of frost for short periods, even when small. They've
survived such periods here in coastal NW England with no damage at all and I
believe Einion Hughes has had the same sort of experience with them in N.
Wales. From the point of view of a coastal gardener they seem to have the
added advantage of being remarkably resistant to wind and salt damage -
unlike, say, callistemons, many of the more desirable of which have an
unfortunate tendency to scorch or self-destruct.
