Maybe you have been reading about pollination and fertilization.
Pollen landing on a stigma is pollination. When a pollen grain grows
a pollen tube to the ovary and joins with an ovule, that process is
fertilization. Sometimes this happens a long time after pollination.
For instance, in filberts, there is a gap of several months between
the two events.
