I remember hearing a strange (and not very practical) sounding solution
to this some years back, that dabbing Roundup on the open flowers would
kill off the entire plant. Never tried it as it just sounded silly, and I
can't imagine it would do much for the copious seeds laying in wait. Has
anyone else heard this or tried it?
Most pro's that I know of use pre-emergent herbicides. Treflan, Snapshot,
and Surflan are some trade names that come to mind. Nasty stuff from what
I've read, and since my bio-hazard suit is still at the cleaners I think
I'll forgo trying it. It would also be disastrous to any beds the intrepid
gardener who relies on things re-seeding themselves might have.
Here in Southern California I actually don't find it to be as bad of a
problem as it was up north in Oregon, where the constant damp seemed to
provide a certain kind of utopian growing condition for it. Here, I just
manually remove the plants, and try to create a little "seep" in between
plants that no doubt have thousands of seeds clinging to them, and wash
everything into a little puddle, remove the seed-infested "mud" and remain
vigilant.
To quote one of our former leaders, Nan, "I feel your pain".
For those of you on the list who aren't in the greater San Diego area,
Nan's been writing up a ton of awesome articles for a local magazine: "San
Diego Home and Garden". Just wanted to throw in some kudos on a job well
done!
