Being a certified cactus nut, my vote for April is anything drastically
spiney with honking-huge flowers. They just fit so well in the
medit-scape. Offering a stark contrast to anything proteaceaus or
eucalyptid, or bonus shagginess to a rockery already abounding with
junipery-pininess, flowering hedgehogs and savage prickly pears seem to
really shine in April. For me at least, I find myself nearly weepy
everytime I see a new lawn irrigation installation going in with our 30
year drought yet to be fully realized. Just such a new install has been
going on right down the street from me, right across the street from
irrigated lawn acreage in Balboa park. What a waste. It's enough to make
me contemplate guerilla gardening- planting out Opuntias in the middle of
the night as a statement against the status quo.

Just my $.02 worth,

Mark
