This beautiful Australian hybrid grevillea is named by the
hybridizer for his
daughter who died at 16. It is one of the most popular ones in
Australia, and now has become popular in California. It is generally frost hardy
for short times. It can get rather large. But it blooms in my garden all year
long, with short breaks. It grows on a dry, hard hillside without any help (once
it was established). Caution: in California plant grevilleas in autumn or winter
so they can establish themselves before the hot weather comes. They are easily
killed by watering on hot summer days and fertilizer. I never have fertilized
any of my 62 grevilleas. I have them planted among other Med type plants that do
not need any attention. They are not long-lasting as cut flowers. But 'Robyn
Gordon' has one of the largest inforesences in the family. The flowers are a
carmine-red. Pruning will extend the lives of grevilleas. UC Santa Cruz
Arboretum has the largest collection outside of Australia. The garden is open
364 days a year and there is no admission.
