You can always try to germinate the seeds w/o
stratifying them. If they don't germinate, then
stratify them. I have thought the same thing with
subtropical/tropical plants, too. I tried growing
fresh Osmanthus fragrans seed. After unsuccessful
germination in the seed room, I gave them a couple of
months of cold in the fridge. They germinated a
couple weeks after that.
