Joe, you must go to Ninfa (not far fro Rome) http://
www.italyheaven.co.uk/lazio/ninfa.html
And to Landriana, also near Rome. http://
www.giardinidellalandriana.it/
Both are FANTASTIC gardens.
I suggest you go back into the Medit archives and look for the
messages from Alessandra Vinciguerra who used to be a regular group
participant. Alessandra worked at both of those gardens (if I
recall correctly) and last I spoke to her, was the horticulturist
in charge of the American Academy in Rome which has some very nice
gardens as well. She also works with La Mortella, a very famous
garden in the south of Italy that belongs to a English woman. We
didn't get to see it but Alessandra raves about it.
We were in Italy at the very end of April/beginning of May a couple
of years back and it was fabulous. The weather was still cool
(mostly sweater weather) and there were not many tourists yet. But
it was very pleasant and rained only once or twice.
We LOVED Cinque Terre and adored Rome. Driving through Tuscany
which we did for two days was divine. The countryside is beautiful
and the wildflowers were out. We stopped in a tiny hilltop
village whose name I'll have to ask my husband, but we loved it.
The town was famous for its alabaster.
If you were thinking of seeing the garden mentioned in the book "A
Garden in Lucca," I advise skipping it. The garden is nice but it
is owned by two American men and the one who is the "gardener" of
the couple is extremely unpleasant. He was the only stinker we met
the entire two weeks in Italy.
If you would like hotel suggestions, etc, please let me know. You
might also email my great friend Patrick Anderson who travels to
Italy regularly and is very much a garden connoisseur. Patrick is
at pmand02@yahoo.com. Please tell him that I suggested you contact
him.
Wish I could go with you....

I am thinking about doing a tour of the gardens of Italy, from
Rome to Sicily. It would include botanical gardens and garden
estates, private or public. 9-14 days.
Where, when, what?
Any and ALL suggestions are welcome.
Thanks,
