Beschorneria yuccoides division of pups from mother plant

Could anyone advise me on how to successfully harvest the pups from the mother plant?
I have dug the whole lot up, but the pups do not seem to have roots of their own. 
Do I need to cut away some of the roots of the mother plant with each pup?
 
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
