There are a couple of Paulownias growing up out of the San Tomas Creek channel where it runs along the center of San Tomas Expressway in Santa Clara, California. When I'm stuck in traffic there, I can see just the tips of the branches--the creek channel is several meters lower than the roadbed (there isn't a way to see the creek itself here). Since I don't see seedings elsewhere, perhaps the local climate is a bit too dry, unless the seed happens to find a water source like these did.

Thanks Lula - glad you like this forum.
Chantal Guiraud (Montpellier, France) of this group mentions (on the
new facebook page) that she had this tree sprout in her garden as a
seedling. Does anyone else find this tree self-seeding in their local
mediterranean climate?
