Le Jardin des Plantes de Paris is very well known around the world, but in truth, the very first French botanical garden was in Montpellier, established in 1597. Le Jardin des Plantes de Montpellier played a pivotal role in the advancements of the science of Botany during its long and interesting history, but because of various political and social reasons, it seems to have receded into relative obscurity.
Recently, this has begun to change - a renaissance of sorts has started. But, concurrent to the increased awareness of this important cultural and historic entity, portions of Le Jardin des Plants de Montpellier are in peril. Since I first became aware of this garden 14 years ago, I've been interested in learning more. In recent years, I've done some talks about the garden's history, with enthusiastic response. I have also started a website based on my presentation and including additional information: https://sites.google.com/site/jardindesplantesdemontpellier/.
Le Jardin de la Reine, a small portion of the larger garden, was originally used for propagation and acclimatization of species collected for study from the surrounding countryside. Because of the 'functional' aspect of this space, it was generally seen only by those doing serious work or research in the garden. Today, this important historical portion is at risk of being lost, and may represent a trend to dismantle and/or 'privatize' the entire garden, potentially obscuring its historical and cultural significance.
If you are concerned about the potential loss of this 400+ year old historic garden, please take a moment to sign the petition linked on the following site: https://sauvonslejardindelareine.wordpress.com/. In your signing comments, mention your concern about Le Jardin de la Reine as well as the entire Jardin des Plantes de Montpellier.
